An apple´s keeper (2024)

One might thoughtlessly grab an apple and eat it while thinking of a thousand other things, as one tends to get stuck in their head or anxious about tomorrow in modern society. This apple‘s keeper will not allow a human to get away with eating it with such little regard for it. That is why the claws of the keeper lock the apple in place when it senses the approach of a human, making it impossible to grab it. However, an apple dagger can be found by its side. This dagger can be used to mindfully cut oneself small pieces of the apple and truly taste the forbidden fruit.
Graduation project from the product design department (BA) of the Iceland University of the Arts.

The claws of the apple‘s keeper reference the christian myth of the serpent in Eden. According to this myth, the serpent of Eden loses its claws for the crime of encouraging humans to taste an apple. Therefore I decided to put the claws of the creature into the spotlight: to criticize the idea that it could ever be wrong to explore natural phenomena through one‘s very own senses.

The form of the apple dagger draws inspiration from the flowery shape of an apple core torn in two. An engraving of the apple‘s keeper is also hidden in the center of the dagger.
